Until the issuance of the US Gold Dollar in 1849, Quarter Eagles enjoyed the status of being the smallest denomination federal gold coin. The Quarter Eagle was redesigned in 1840 with new engravings of Christian Gobrecht’s rendering of Liberty.
Gobrecht’s obverse design was paired with the familiar heraldic eagle that has been used in several forms since the beginning of Quarter Eagle coinage.
